What You Need To Know About NYC's New Nutella Cafe
If you haven’t already heard, the second Nutella Café in the country is officially open! Following Ferrero’s first delicious launch of the Nutella Café in Chicago, the beloved chocolate company opened it’s highly anticipated (the lines were insane opening day!) café’s doors in New York City on Nov. 14.
The New York City café menu is offering many of the fan favorites that can be found in Chicago, such as the popular Pound Cake Panzanella and Grilled Baguette, but has also added some treats that are exclusive to NYC like the Brioche Sandwich. This dessert is a dollop of Nutella Gelato sandwiched between two pieces of brioche which is caramelized to perfection. Other specialties include a frozen push-pop, a hazelnut blondie, grilled banana bread, Panzanella and a chia seed parfait layered with, what else, but Nutella.
Highly Instagrammable, this Nutella heaven is also filled with an endless selection of Nutella jars and Nutella themed gifts (what better items to give to your favorite chocolate fiend than a Nutella spreader? Or Nutella-themed mug, tumbler or recipe book?) It even has a crepe station and a section of the menu appropriately titled “Spread the Happy,” which lets customers get crazy with the addictive hazelnut spread, making their own special Nutella-based concoctions. On the menu, you can choose from a Nutella-filled crepe, Liège waffle, French toast, pancake or country-style oats, and choose from a variety of goodies to fill and stuff it with such as whipped cream, chopped hazelnuts, gelato, berries and other fruit and seasonal compotes.
We chatted with Rick Fossali, VP of Operations, Nutella Café, to hear more about this new café, the ubiquitous love of Nutella and what you need to try at the café asap!
What is it about Nutella that people absolutely love? How has its popularity endured, and even increased, since its creation?
Nutella is beloved across the globe in large part because of its creamy texture and its delicious, nutty-cocoa taste. I think people also love Nutella because of how versatile it is–from pastries to baguettes, pancakes to waffles, there are so many foods which pair beautifully with Nutella. We’re excited to showcase this at our New York Cafe where we have several unique–and even unexpected–Nutella pairings including a Nutella crème brulee and an all-new sourdough toast with Nutella hazelnut spread, ricotta and seasonal fruit (right now, mandarin and raspberry).
What the inspiration for the new NYC-exclusive items on the menu? What can guests look forward to from this all-Nutella-everything menu?
Our menu features a mix of Chicago fan favorites like the Pound Cake Panzanella, Grilled Baguette and Crepes, as well as dishes exclusive to New York. For the items new to this location, we looked at regional trends and what’s hot in New York, which is how we landed on items such as Chia Hemp Seed Pudding, Hazelnut Blondies and the Grilled Banana Bread. Other NYC-specific items we are excited about include the Frozen Nutella Pop, the Brioche Gelato Sandwich and the Sourdough Toast with Ricotta and seasonal fruit. Plus we’ve added the Spread Your Happy–Choose Your Own menu where you can build your own Nutella experience.
How was the first Nutella Cafe received in Chicago? Do you expect this one in NYC to be even more of a hit?
Our first-ever Nutella Cafe opened in Chicago in May 2017 and has experienced an outstanding response, popular with both locals and tourists alike. We anticipate that our New York location will be received just as well–in fact, we’ve already had a very positive response! Since our grand opening, hundreds of eager visitors have stopped by and welcomed us to the neighborhood.
What’s your favorite way to enjoy Nutella?
You really can’t go wrong with any of our menu items! However, I do personally love the Chia Hemp Seed Pudding–the pudding is infused with Nutella hazelnut spread, topped with tangy Greek Yogurt and fresh fruit and finished off with a drizzle of Nutella. It’s the perfect combination of flavors and a great way to start the day.
