Vladimir Putin will seek reelection as Russian president

Russian president Vladimir Putin said Wednesday he will seek another term.

Putin made the announcement during a speech to workers at an auto factory in the Volga city of Nizhny Novgorod.

“I will put forward my candidacy for the post of president of the Russian federation,” he said.

Putin has been in power since 2000, acting as both president and prime minister.

The 65-year-old former KGB agent enjoys incredibly high approval ratings at home, with support topping 80% in recent polls.

“Thank you for your work, for your attitude to your jobs, your factory, your city and your country!” Putin told workers. “I’m sure that together we will succeed.”

Just hours earlier, Putin was asked about his political future at a meeting with young volunteers in Moscow.

He said he would decide shortly if he would seek another six-year term.

Putin served two terms as president from 2000 to 2008 before becoming the country’s prime minister.

Dmitry Medvedev succeeded him as president and extended the office’s term to six years before stepping down and allowing Putin to regain his position as leader of the former Soviet republic.
