“A very sad day for journalism, but a great day for our Country!” Trump wrote on Twitter.

The president noted in his tweet that BuzzFeed previously published a dossier on unverified allegations about Trump’s ties to Russia.

BuzzFeed has long defended its publication of the controversial document in January 2017, but Trump and his GOP allies have ripped it, casting it as a discredited piece of opposition research.

“Remember it was Buzzfeed that released the totally discredited ‘Dossier,’ paid for by Crooked Hillary ClintonHillary Diane Rodham ClintonDershowitz to The Atlantic: Do not violate Constitution to safeguard it Why Joe Biden (or any moderate) cannot be nominated GOP Rep. Tom Marino resigns from Congress MORE and the Democrats (as opposition research), on which the entire Russian probe is based!” Trump tweeted Friday.

The president also appeared to use the disputed BuzzFeed report this week to renew his attacks on the press at large, retweeting various supporters blasting news organizations and tweeting that “Fake News is truly the ENEMY OF THE PEOPLE!”

BuzzFeed News released a report Thursday alleging that Trump had instructed Cohen to lie to Congress about the timing of negotiations over the construction of a Trump Tower in Moscow.

Various Democrats seized on the report throughout the day Friday, with some using the latest bombshell allegation to call for Trump’s impeachment.

On Friday night, special counsel Robert MuellerRobert Swan MuellerSasse: US should applaud choice of Mueller to lead Russia probe MORE‘s office issued a rare statement disputing the veracity of BuzzFeed’s report.

“BuzzFeed’s description of specific statements to the Special Counsel’s Office, and characterization of documents and testimony obtained by this office, regarding Michael Cohen’s Congressional testimony are not accurate,” special counsel spokesman Peter Carr said in a statement obtained by The Hill.

Trump’s personal attorney Rudy Giuliani commended the special counsel’s office for their statement on the report.

“I commend Bob Mueller’s office for correcting the BuzzFeed false story that Pres. Trump encouraged Cohen to lie,” he tweeted. “I ask the press to take heed that their hysterical desire to destroy this President has gone too far. They pursued this without critical analysis all day.”

BuzzFeed issued its own statement Friday night saying they “stand by our reporting and the sources who informed it” and urged “the Special Counsel to make clear what he’s disputing.”

BuzzFeed has defended the publication of the Steele dossier on their site previously.
