Stephen Colbert to Trump after Thai cave rescue: Listen, 'freeing children makes people like you'

Stephen Colbert took the highly-publicized rescue of 12 boys from a cave in Thailand as a chance to jab President TrumpDonald John TrumpEx-FBI lawyer won’t attend interview with House lawmakers: attorney Trump officials to release migrants with ankle monitors North Korea state media release photos of Kim at potato farm after Pompeo visit MORE over family separations at the southern U.S. border.

Colbert on his show Tuesday night praised the news that the entire soccer team and their coach were successfully rescued earlier that day from the Tham Luang cave where they had been trapped for over two weeks.

“That feels good,” the late-night host said. “In fact, it’s a great story that gives everyone hope.”

“Everybody loves this story,” he continued. “Are you listening, Mr. President? Freeing children makes people like you.”

Colbert then tore into the president for missing the court-ordered deadline to reunite minor children under 5 years old with their parents, noting the number of “toddlers still in cages.”

The administration said earlier this week that it would not be able to reunite all 102 children under the age of 5 with their families, and would likely be able to reunite only 54 of them with their parents by the deadline.

“That means there are 48 toddlers still in cages,” Colbert said. “These kids would have a better chance of being reunited with their parents if they went spelunking with a Thai soccer coach.”

The judge also set a July 26 deadline for the reunification of other minors separated from their parents.

Thousands of children were separated from their families in recent months under the Trump administration’s “zero tolerance” policy that prioritizes prosecution for all illegal border-crossers.
