Google is expected to unveil the Pixel 2 and Pixel 2 XL on October 4 at an event it has started advertising quite heavily on billboards and even on the Chrome start page. However, there’s little doubt now what these phones will look like — another leak has dropped official renders and pricing for both devices. The Pixel 2 XL (left) looks to be getting a price bump this year, but the regular Pixel 2 (right) will stay the same.
The new leak comes by way of Android Blog DroidLife, which seems to have gotten access to an incomplete Google Store page for both devices (they include URLs for the Pixel 2 and 2 XL that currently 404). Additionally, the renders posted by DL only show the devices from the back, and they appear to be scaled up from smaller images. Still, this is the first leak of official renders, which will most likely be a match for the final product.
The smaller Pixel is the less interesting of the two, as it is expected to retain most of the design elements from the 2016 phone. It will start at $ 649 like the first-gen device, but the base storage is expected to be 64GB instead of 32GB. An upgrade to 128GB will add $ 100 to the price. Most of the phone is aluminum, with a strip of glass at the top somewhat smaller than the glass panel on the first Pixel. The fingerprint sensor is in the metal portion, rather than surrounded by glass. Google is again using quirky names for the colors; the Pixel 2 will be available in Kinda Blue, Just Black, and Clearly White. It’s worth noting, the white phone (if it really is white) will be painted, as you cannot anodize aluminum white.
The Pixel 2 XL has a similar look from the back, but we believe it will have a larger edge-to-edge display on the front. Still, it’s got the same aluminum frame with the band of glass at the top. According to DroidLife, this phone will only come in Black & White and Just Black. Again, that white phone is probably painted white, which might not be great for longevity. The Pixel 2 XL also seems to have an odd orange-accented power button on the side. There’s no telling what Google has planned there.
The Pixel 2 XL will also start with 64GB of storage, but the price will be $ 849 according to the leak. That’s $ 80 more than last year’s Pixel XL, although you do get twice the storage in the base model. A 128GB upgrade adds $ 100 to the price. Apple’s iPhone 8 Plus is only $ 799, but it’s not too late for Google to adjust the price before launch.
