Mother loses nearly all her limbs after hospital misdiagnosis

A British mother says she lost nearly all of her limbs after a doctor failed to see she was suffering from sepsis that she contracted while in the hospital.

Magdalena Malec, 31, was forced to wait six months before having both her legs, her right arm and the fingers of her left hand all amputated as a result of the illness, SWNS reports.

The mother of two had suffered from complications during her third pregnancy which resulted in a miscarriage. She was sent home with medication but continued to suffer from bleeding and cramping.

When she returned to Luton & Dunstable University Hospital on Christmas Day in 2014, doctors determined she suffered an ectopic pregnancy, which is when the fertilized egg implants itself outside the womb and requires immediate surgery.

While she was recovering from the resulting surgery, doctors and medical staff failed to notice classic warning signs that Malec was suffering from sepsis, including a high temperature, skin irritation in the legs and the inability to use the bathroom, the outlet reports.

As a result, Malec’s arteries in her limbs became blocked and her body tissue became severely damaged.

Instead of undergoing immediate surgery, she was then forced to wait six months, undergoing dialysis at the hospital three times a week, before surgeons amputated most of her limbs.

She also needed a kidney transplant.

“I have been left on my own, starting with re-learning how to walk, comb my hair, eat, and brush my teeth,” she told the outlet.

She says her relationship with her husband ended as a result of what she went through.

“Nothing will restore what I had,” she says.

The hospital has apologized for what happened and admitted this could have been avoided.

“The Trust wishes to convey its sincere apologies to Ms Malec and recognizes that the care provided to her in 2014 fell below the standards that we strive for…We would like to assure Ms Malec, and all patients that we continue to work towards ensuring the quality of our services are maintained and improved where possible,” according to the statement obtained by the outlet.

Malec has filed a lawsuit against the hospital, which is still pending.

“The catastrophic chain of events which led to Magdalena’s near death and horrendous injuries were completely avoidable if the hospital Trust had followed its own sepsis protocol,” Malec’s attorney said in a statement.
