Italy: One dead, at least 70 injured in tanker explosion near Bologna airport
One person died while 70 others have been injured in a tanker explosion close to the Bologna Airport in Italy, which sent massive fireballs into the sky, reported AP. Police also said in a statement Monday that between 60 and 70 people were injured, some with serious burns, when a tanker truck carrying explosive materials was in a traffic accident.
The news agency ANSA said the tanker was carrying liquefied petroleum gas. The explosion sent flames soaring into the air. Police said they had closed off the motorway where the crash took place as well as the surrounding area in Borgo Panigale, on the outskirts of Bologna.
Italian firefighters tweeted that they’ve sent multiple rescue and emergency squads, including one from their urban search and rescue team. Italian private Sky TG24 reported that some of the injured people had been hit by flying glass when windows in nearby buildings exploded.
Videos posted on social media showed a giant fireball and smoke emanating towards the sky, as police deployed firefighters to the spot. The explosion took place on the bypass in Borgo Panigale, according to local reports.
While the cause of the explosion is yet to be ascertained, local reports suggest a vehicle collision on the highway.
