ICE Detention of Undocumented UC Berkeley Student Prompts Campus Outrage

An illegal alien who was studying at the University of Berkeley, California is facing deportation after officials from the U.S. Immigrations and Customs Enforcement took him into custody.

The move prompted UC Berkeley students to launch a campaign demanding his release. Facebook posts penned by his girlfriend state that the student, Luis Mora, was stopped at an immigration checkpoint on December 30, where he admitted his status as an illegal alien.

In response to the campaign, UC Berkeley officials are now scrambling to provide Mora with legal assistance, and to support students who are “managing immigration issues,” reports Campus Reform.

Speaking to the publication, a university spokeswoman said that the school is “seeking to confirm all the facts of this distressing news.”

“We are looking into the matter to determine everything we can do to support and assist the student during this difficult time,” she added.

In a Facebook post written by Mora’s girlfriend, Jaleen Udarbe, officials from San Diego Customs and Border Control stopped the two of them at an immigration checkpoint as they walked home on the night of December 30.

“He was honest with border patrols about his situation and told them he is an undocumented student at UC Berkeley,” she wrote. “Despite showing proof that he is in America to study at an University [sic], he was taken away by San Diego Border Patrols. [sic] He was not allowed to bring anything with him except his IDs and cash.

According to Campus Reform, Mora studies “Political Science Pre-law”, and claims to have attended high school in California. He graduated from Southwestern College before transferring to the more prestigious university as a junior. His girlfriend states that Mora was “planning to get into Law School” and has no criminal record.

Following her post on Facebook, other students recommended she contact UC Berkeley’s faculty office to seek help. Students informed her that the University of California system sent out “repeated emails” that it “supports its undocumented.”

Udarbe announced on Tuesday that a campaign was launched with the support of a UC Berkeley student group called Rising Immigrant Scholars through Education (RISE) to petition ICE to exercise prosecutorial discretion when they deal with his case.

As noted by Campus Reform, the UC system and its president, former Secretary of Homeland Security Janet Napolitano, have a history of supporting illegal aliens. Like other schools in the system, UC Berkeley has declared itself a sanctuary campus.
