Former Lobbyist Turned Inmate Is Now Fighting For Criminal Justice Reform
Kevin Ring is a former lobbyist and Senate Judiciary Committee counsel, who went to prison himself, and is now back on the Hill fighting for sentencing reform. On this episode of the Federalist Radio Hour, Ben Domenech talks to Ring about the case of Matthew Charles and Ring’s own personal experiences with law enforcement.
Ring is the president of Families Against Mandatory Minimums, and he’s making the case for prosecutorial discretion for defendants like Matthew Charles.
“If the reason [Charles] is doing well is because he got out, how many other people are serving 30-year sentences that maybe deserve a second chance?” Ring asked.
Ring’s shares his testimony, from FBI raids to trial to his post-prison life.
“These guys are like, ‘What are you here for? Abducting a minor across state lines. What are you?’ I gave somebody Wiggles tickets.”
