'Empire' Fall 2018 Season Finale Recap: Lucious Becomes Unhinged, But Finally, Some Answers

EMPIRE: L-R: Jussie Smollett, Bryshere Y. Gray, Terrence Howard, Taraji P. Henson and Trai Byers in the “Had It From My Father” fall finale episode of EMPIRE.Matt Dinerstein/FOX

The season five fall finale (also called a mid-season finale) of Empire, namedHad It From My Father” answers some important questions introduced during the season but also leaves a satisfying cliffhanger that leaves you salivating for more.

Let’s get right to it.

Cookie  (Taraji P. Henson) and Lucious (Terrence Howard) are preparing for the Lyon Family Management showcase event, with all of their artists. This LFM show is designed to raise money for them and to show that they can take on even the big willies who finance their old company, which is now run by Kingsley and Giselle. They are ready and excited to get things cracking. Against the backdrop of this important concert, designed to bring more funders to the family, the drama of Jeff Kingsley (A.Z. Kelzey) takes center stage. The pissed off kid-turned-adult is possibly Lucious’ bonus child via a junkie – “white girl Tracy- that a drug-dealing Lucious used to sleep with and sell drugs to back in the 1980s.

Cut to Andre, Teri and Quincy getting out of jail and getting home.

Quincy is home and his mother celebrates with a Christmas tree and asks Quincy what he wants. He wants hotdogs on the beach. Odd but real. Done! Meanwhile, Andre is starting to get distant and starting to back off. He leaves mother and son alone to reunite – leaving his puzzled lady love at home with her newly-released son. Andre (Trai Byers) all but runs away saying, “I have a lot of work to catch up on.”

Cut to Cookie planning the showcase. (Sidenote: Cookie has planned a plethora of showcases this season hasn’t she?) She and everybody at the Lyon estate are bustling about, taking notes and finishing tasks. Then they are captured by what comes on air on television. It’s Kai, with a special report.

Kai’s Special Report

He says that Empire has been using data in an improper manner.

“Empire has been gathering customer data, even geo-tracking and selling them to the highest bidder.”

He adds, their customers usually have other customers and the biggest customer is law enforcement. Jaws drop.

And over at Empire headquarters everyone gasps and curses. Says Becky (Gabby Sidibe): “Why it gotta be popo?”

Meanwhile, over at the Lyon mansion, Lucious is eating on the couch and congratulating Jamal (Jussie Smollett) on snagging a journalist for a boyfriend, then a fiance. Cookie tries to get her men to focus on the showcase: “That is the end. The end. We started a new one: LFM management.”

Cut back to Empire, with Kingsley at headquarters. Everything and everybody is buzzing about the news on the data mining of Empire. Someone has to fall on their sword and Kingsley swears to find the person responsible and make them pay. But who is responsible?

Back at rehearsal for the LFM Showcase, Cookie is trying to get the various groups to work together on stage. There is an empty spot on stage because Hakeem is a no-show. And Cookie doesn’t want Jamal to sing a love song at the showcase. “Can I live?” Jamal asks, but Cookie says no. Lucious leaves and heads out to let Cookie handle it. Cookie tells the lackluster group that she wants them to perform for Apple, Live Nation and other big tech companies. Devon (Mario) speaks back, wondering aloud where no-show Hakeem is. Cookie snaps back with the quotable of the episode.

“That’s what wrong with you celebates! You got all this pent-up energy. Why don’t you put it in your performance and make this count!” As always Cookie has the last word.

Tiana and Hakeem Break Up. For Real.

Over at Tiana’s  (Serayah) house, she and Hakeem are talking. He apologizes for his bad behavior.  Tiana says she’s sorry too and she can’t deal with the drama and violence anymore. The two decide to part ways but to be “Good to each other,” for the sake of the kids. Hakeem (Bryshere Gray) leans in to kiss her and she declines. He leaves. This is why he missed rehearsal.

Back at LFM, Andre is telling Lucious about the tech companies that are jumping ship from Empire. He ignores a call from Quincy’s mom, Teri. Lucious calls him on that, “What, she aint important no more?” Andre is afraid of bringing death and destruction to Teri and Quincy but Lucious says “Have you ever stopped to think, maybe you deserve all of it son? You’re like me. We don’t just survive, we thrive when everything else perishes.” Cookie overhears this and slides away back.

Cut to Hakeem visiting Blake over at the pool hall. He stalks in like he owns it and talks to Blake about the kids and Tiana. He tells Blake about the near shooting when his daughter found the gun. Blake reconfirms that he and T never had an affair. The boy buds make up.

Cut to the beach, where Quincy and Teri are on the sand in winter coats, eating hot dogs. Andre shows up and Quincy gives them some privacy. Andre confesses to Teri about his darkness and his mental problems. He calls her light and says he wants to be near her. He tells her he is a dangerous man. She says that’s not what she sees. She will take the risk to be around him. The lovers embrace and kiss.

Becky Is Fired

Over at Empire headquarters, Kingsley approaches Becky and says he’s been checking her emails and accuses her of setting him up with the news and Kai. Giselle (Nicole Ari Parker) demands to know how Kingsley came to that conclusion. “Sink or swim,” says Kingsley, adding that someone is going down because he is not going to let the owners think he is responsible for the leaks. Becky is escorted out of the building. Of course, one of the first people to know what happened is Lucious. Thirsty shows up and tells Lucious what’s happening. And it’s clear that Becky has been still working with Lucious in some capacity.

As Jamal is prepping for his performance at the LFM Showcase, Kai (Toby Onwumere) comes in and says that someone else dropped a dime on the dossiers that Lucious kept on his own artists. Jamal fights for his father. Jamal encourages him to look deeper into that dossier and reminds him that he was friends with a drug addict. “My family don’t need the noise right now.” Kai thinks Jamal is asking him to not do his job. “You know what half-truths and partial truths can do.” Kai is going to do the story anyway on the terrible things Lucious has done. Jamal asks for the dossier. Kai agrees to hold off on the story and threatens to break off the engagement. Kai has a job opportunity in London and he’s going over to talk it out. Kai wants a break.

Downstairs at the LFM Showcase, Cookie is in fine form with a fly, body-fitting dress. She is looking for Lucious, but he’s left to go find Becky, presumably. Cookie addresses the crowd:

“Tonight marks a new era in music. A new way to find that talent and nurture it and bring it to the public. Ladies and gentlemen, we are the Lyons and tonight we are proud to introduce to you our family.” Hakeem, Blake and Tiana take the stage first and kill the show. The energy is sexy and suave. Blake shows up and only enhances the song.

Back at Empire headquarters, Giselle rails into Kingsley, telling him that Becky has nothing to do with this Kai fiasco. But Kingsley says he could have also implicated Giselle, so she should be quiet. And then Lucious shows up and starts punching the snot – and blood – out of Kingsley. He might kill him. But Giselle intervenes and says several times, “Lucious, he is your son. He is your son. His mother is in the rehab place, you know her as white Tracy.”

Says Lucious: “That’s impossible.”

Says Kingsley: “Wanna hit me again, dad?”

Lucious drives over to see white Tracy and Lucious, still in his silver suit, addresses her. There is a flashback to a young Lucious dealing cocaine. A young Shyne is there too. Shyne tells Lucious to lay off the chicks and find one to stick with. Back in present day, Tracy begs Lucious to look at a graduation picture. She begs him to see the similarities between him and Kingsley. Lucious says they only hung out a few times, the kid isn’t his. But Tracy counters that it only takes once. She offers him a DNA test.

Regaining Empire?

Lucious returns to the showcase and he is stunned. He wants to tell Cookie what’s happened but she tells him to wait until later because the show is almost over. The show is going wonderfully when Giselle shows up and says she is offering a co-partnership because she doesn’t trust Kingsley. “I’m also offering you the throne, with me as co-partner,” says Giselle. Cookie isn’t convinced. She would prefer to stick with their new business. Lucious is interested in his old baby, of course. He wants to reclaim the company they spent 20 years building.

Says Cookie, “We gotta choose between our future and our foundation?” She wants them to do it all be label and distributor for the artists. Lucious says they don’t have the bandwidth. Cookie then reaches into her designer purse and gives him a $ 5 million check from selling the condo. She’s ride-or-die. She sold her extra house. Lucious again tries to tell Cookie about the bonus child, Kingsley. Cookie says to wait until they get home, whatever it is. Lucious puts the condo check in his suit pocket.

Kingsley The Bonus Boy

Cookie and Lucious get back to the LFM stage and thank everyone for supporting them. This is only the beginning, they say. But then there’s an interruption. Is it Kai?! NO!!! It’s Kingsley, bloody and swollen in the face. And pissed. He also has a mic that is tapped into the sound system.

He gives a speech. “Dad. Should we tell them? Yeah, you heard it here first. Lucious Lyon is my father. You’ve all heard this story about when Cookie met Lucious, but have you heard the one about when Lucious met my mother, had her knocked up and got her hooked on crack?”

There’s a flashback to a little Kingsley walking up the stoop steps of Lucious house, while Andre – looking to be around five – is playing on the steps with a toy. Lucious tells Tracy he doesn’t sling out of his house and he gives her $ 20 and tells her to go find Shyne to get some coke. Tracy tells Lucious she’s been to rehab and tells her son to say hi to Lucious Lyon. Lucious says “cute kid,” but is dismissive.

Back in the present, Kingsley holds up the $ 20 that was given to his mother. Then he tells the crowd that Lucious hit him. “Today I got a taste of what it is to be a Lyon boy. I’m not jealous anymore because I wasn’t raised by that man and that makes me the lucky one.”

The family is on stage stunned.  Turns out that Tracy was on the floor crying after Lucious left her. Jamal and Hakeem ask Lucious if he did it, if it’s true. Cookie asks the same, on stage. They are all absolutely stunned. Andre tried to walk off before but was stopped by his father. But now they all start to walk off stage, one by one.

Andre is first to stalk up to Kingsley, where he announces, “I’m gonna end you.”

Retorts Kingsley: “Not unless I end you first baby bro. Bring it.”

Last cut of the season: Three months later, someone is on the stretcher in the hospital and Cookie is hollering to the doctors to save her baby! But which baby is it? It’s Andre!! He’s writhing in pain.  The last thing we see is the doctors shocking Andre’s heart with a defibrillator. He flatlines.
